UK Cheddar Prices Are Rising:

UK Cheddar wholesale prices were up 30.9% year on year in September to their highest level since 2013. Cheese makers have seen their milk supplies plummet by 10% because farmers producing milk got manufactured products “didn’t get the support that liquid milk farmers have had during the past two years”.

British cheese is now highly competitive abroad, retailers could find themselves with no supplies if they refuse to pay higher.

Prices are on the up once again due to unfavourable weather conditions hitting this year’s crop of potatoes. EU potato prices are also up due to the production falling by 2%.

PepsiCo Promises to Cut down Sugar, Saturated Fat and Salt Levels:

PepsiCo has said that they are working towards cutting down the amount of bad ingredients within their products. By 2025 at least two-thirds of PepsiCo drinks will have 100 calories or fewer from added sugar per 355ml serving, while at least two thirds of its food products will have less than 1.1g of saturated fat per 100 calories.

A New Report Reveals That More People Now Die from Cancer Than They Do from Heart Disease:

A major study into European trends in deaths from cardiovascular disease has found that in the UK the biggest killer is now cancer with 167,000 people in the country losing their lives to the disease in 2014.

However, health experts are worried that heart disease may well regain its position at the top of the table due to the growing obesity crisis in the UK. Coronary heart disease (CHD) claims more than 73,000 deaths in the UK each year accounting for one in six men and one in 10 women.

Although it isn’t possible for someone to change the genetic factors which may mean they are more susceptible to CHD, experts say that for most people it’s possible for them to reduce the risk of not only heart disease but other chronic diseases, such as cancer, by adopting a more healthy lifestyle which includes:

  • Eating a more balanced diet. Being overweight puts added strain on the heart so cutting down on sugar and eating plenty of fruit and vegetables can help maintain a healthy weight.
  • Getting regular exercise. Exercise lowers the risk of a heart attack by 30 per cent.   Aerobic exercise like walking, swimming and cycling is especially beneficial. For a free fitness plan, why not have a look at this?
  • Keeping alcohol consumption to within the recommended national guidelines of 14 units a week.
  • Not smoking. If you’re a smoker who’d like to quite, this might help.

Singing Helps Dementia!

A singing group for people with dementia and their carers will be celebrating its first anniversary – and is making a real difference to the lives of its members.

Dementia Support South Lincs has been running the group, which meets at The Danish Invader pub, in Stamford, for just under a year. The singing group was the idea of Clive Marshall and with the help of our volunteers Sue and Ann, plus pianist Marion, his dream of a lighthearted, no pressure singing group has come to life.

Kate Marshall, one of the founders of Dementia Support South Lincs, said singing can be very beneficial for those living with dementia. She said: “Music taps in to long-term memories and even people whose health means they find it difficult to put words together can often remember song lyrics. “Living with dementia can be tough – for those affected and also their carers. “We try and focus on the positives at Dementia Support South Lincs and the singing group offers the chance to have a couple of hours of fun and friendship.”

How to Reduce Food Waste: Organise, Categorise and Love Your Leftovers:

Every year consumers, retailers, wholesalers and caterers in the UK waste approximately 8 million tonnes of manufactured food. According to the Government more than half of this is wasted at home. With a total value of £16bn, this is the equivalent of £700 per household each year.

Here’s ways in which to prevent yourself from producing food waste:

  • Get organised: Take a ‘shelfie’: Simply take a photo of the contents of your fridge before you leave the house could save the average UK household £235 a year – the average being wasted on over-buying!
  • Label lovers: The ‘best before’ date refers to the quality and taste. The food will be safe to eat after this date but may not be at its best in terms of flavour and texture. You can’t beat looking, smelling, and tasting for a reliable indicator of freshness – but remember, just because the date might have passed, the food could still be perfectly edible! 
  • Your fridge is your temple: First In, First Out: Follow FIFO when unpacking shopping; organise items by the use-by date, moving new products to the back. This way, you’re more likely to use up the older stuff before it expires.
  • Pack it right: Store food in the correct place in the fridge; it’s colder near the bottom so that’s where you should keep perishables like meat and dairy. Likewise, some food benefits from being kept at room temperature.
