24th February: Hello from Collective Purchasing! This week in our Weekly Vine: Pancake day prep, The Big Knit update and top news from the week.
‘The Big Knit’ has reached £1.9m for Age UK:
Have you seen Innocent Smoothies in the shops with cute, little woolly hats on top of them? It has been an incentive to raise money for charity. Every time somebody buys a bottle of Innocent Smoothies with a hand knitted hat on it, they donate 25p to Age UK to keep our oldies warm in the winter months. It has now been announced that The Big Knit has reached a whopping £1.9 million for Age UK.
This campaign started back in 2003, now a total of 6 million hats have been knitted by the lovely volunteer knitters, young and old!
Pancake Day is coming…
What is Shrove Tuesday/Pancake Day?
Shrove Tuesday/Pancake Day, is the traditional ‘feast day’ before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. The real meaning of Shrove Tuesday: eat everything to get it out of the house before you enter Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter. Traditionally lent is a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession and were “shriven” (absolved from their sins). A bell would be rung to call people to confession. This came to be called the “Pancake Bell” and is still rung today. In prep for a modern day Pancake Day, make sure you stock up on pancake mix, yummy toppings and of course anything and everything else you want to eat before you start Lent!
