Are you getting enough fluid daily?

As the temperature rises, it’s more important than ever make sure we are having enough fluid throughout the day. After all, water is the most essential nutrient our body needs.

Our bodies are made up of more than half water and we use it for pretty much every bodily function — from regulating body temperature to removing waste.

Staying Hydrated

While a tall glass of water is the best-known way to stay hydrated, there are plenty of alternative options. You could try milk, coconut water, fruit juice, smoothies or even iced tea or coffee.

You could also try adding flavours to water such lemon, lime, mint or berries.

Water doesn’t just have to come from drinks. Who says you can’t have your water — and eat it, too?

Apparently, 20% of your daily water intake should come from food. Soups, yoghurts and porridge are great ways of consuming fluid. However with summer in full swing why not try the following summer friendly fruit and vegetables which are loaded with water.

Our favourites are below;

  • Watermelon: This summertime staple is not only made up of a whopping 92% water but it also contains salt, calcium and magnesium; all crucial in rehydration.
  • Celery: more than a garnish, this veg stick is roughly 95% water and full of fibre. Although not packed full of nutrients they are a great snack to have.
  • Cucumber: Another veg stick that is composed of 96% water, cucumber is a versatile addition to any summer day. You can add it to salads or grate it and add it to natural yoghurt to make a summer dip.
  • Strawberries: Yes you can have strawberries without the cream and still enjoy them! This sweet treat is roughly 92% water, the most of all the berries.

Babies, children and the elderly are all more prone to dehydration. Older adults have less water in their bodies and often don’t realise they are thirsty. If they can’t get around very well anymore, they may not be able to get a drink easily. So ensuring they are getting enough fluid in the day is crucial. Let us know your top tips on staying hydrated.
